Maria Sharapova is to appeal a two-year doping ban imposed by the International Tennis Federation. The Russian was handed the ban following a positive drug test at 2016 Australian Open.

She says the punishment is too severe, as the tribunal concluded that she did not intentionally violate the anti-doping rules, "I cannot accept an unfairly harsh two-year suspension. The tribunal, whose members were selected by the ITF, agreed that I did not do anything intentionally wrong, yet they seek to keep me from playing tennis for two years. I will immediately appeal the suspension portion of this ruling to CAS, the Court of Arbitration for Sport."

In a statement the ITF says the ban will be backdated to January 2016, meaning Sharapova's Australian Open results will be disqualified. The former world number one stunned the sporting world in March, when she announced that she had tested positive for meldonium, a drug she had been taking for a decade to treat diabetes and low magnesium. Meldonium was added to the list of banned substances at the start of 2016, after evidence showed it enhanced athletic performance.
